History of the City of Pearls
Hyderabad, a city created as a tribute to a beloved begum- Hyder Mahal from a loving Quli Qutub Shahi Dynasty about 425 years ago is, in present day India, a fascinating concoction of old blended with new and ancient, coexisting with hi-tech. On the one hand, there is the synonymous Charminar, Mecca Masjid, Falaknuma Palace and Salar Jung Museum; opulent representations of the lavish lifestyles of yesteryear and on the other we have Hi-Tech City the centre of South India's IT industry.

Though surrounded on all sides by land, Hyderabad has a long standing association with the gem of the seas the pearl. One must wonder how this has come to be but considering the opulent and lavish lifestyle of the regal rulers of the Deccan over the centuries, it is hardly surprising. Such a passion and royal love for pearls and precious stones created a flourishing pearl and gems bazaar. Artisans of the Deccan and from the Arabian Gulf, beckoned by this opportunity, perfected ways in selecting, polishing and setting precious stones and pearls in particular, under the guidance of the Nizams. The influence of the Arabian artisans combined with the increased availability made Hyderabad a one stop destination for pearls.

To truly appreciate the quality and variety of the white, grayish, pink, purple and even black pearls, the Pearl bazaar in Patthar Ghatti in the old city is the place to be. This bounty of the sea has a translucence that no Diamond can match and a sheen so dignified that Royalty claims it as their gem of choice. Truly a symbol of purity and style a reflection of the City of Pearls Hyderabad.
